The Art of Autumn

The Art of Autumn

There’s something about the scent in the autumn air, isn’t there? There’s rejuvenation as the leaves begin to turn colors and fall. It is almost as if the year gone by is resembled in the new season. Out with the old in with the new. Even if the year has been enjoyable, Autumn still urges one to know good things don’t last forever, so enjoy it while you can. If the year has been a struggle, Fall also reminds us that bad times won’t last forever so press on Saint, a new leaf awaits. While to some, the enjoying of seasons is not theological, but to those of us who see all-of-life for the glory of God, we know the joy that is ingrained in God’s sovereign design even in the seasons. Allow me, if you would, to just enjoy a boast about God’s goodness in the seasons, which for me is that gorgeous, life-giving, invigorating season so famously called, Autumn!

Autumn for me has always been a season where devotional worship increases as the warmth of the home rises. Reading many books and much scripture as you look out the window and enjoy that natural harvest filter. Those fall colors that provide the heart with comfort and a quiet joy. Those evening walks under the harvest moon with the smell of coffee in the air. That colder weather that brings out the beautiful display of flannel jackets gathered around a bond fire roasting marshmallows.  For those that enjoy a nice liberty, the cigars and stouts are celebrated to the glory of God on those brisk nights. The community and fellowship becomes sweeter as bodies gather in that cozy home on those late nights. The anniversary of The Reformation becomes alive as little ones celebrate through pinning the 95 thesis on the door under a harvest moon. Can’t you just taste and see the Lord is good, especially so, in Autumn? Can’t you just see the Lord’s wisdom in the changing of the seasons. For some, the summer sun brings life, for others the spring flowers convey newness, and others yet enjoy advent season. All this to say, I am excited for the many joyful nights that await in Autumn! I am excited to enjoy good books, good food, good coffee, great company, and even more so, amazing Jesus, in a home filled with fall décor, all to the glory of God!

Pause, meditate, and savor the seasons! Thanks for allowing me to reflect on God’s goodness. Back to my coffee and reading!
